LECTURES

Week 1:

First class of Design Principles module and we meet our lecturer, Dr. Charles through Teams meeting. Dr. Charles introduce and brief us about this module. We ran through the MIB and Dr. Charles explained to us about basic design elements.

  • conceptual element: point, line, plane
  • visual element: shape, size colour, texture
  • relational element: direction, position, gravity, space
  • practical element: representation, function

Besides, we also learned about elements of design, principles of design, Gestalt theory and contrast in pre-recorded lectures.

Elements of Design
- Individual "ingredients", when put together in a composition adhering to principles of design

  • Dot
  • Line
  • Shape
  • Form
  • Colour
  • Value
  • Texture
  • Space

Principles of Design
- Concepts used to organise / arrange the elements of design.
- A way to give structure to design work and meaning to the piece.

  • Balance
  • Emphasis
  • Contrast
  • Repetition
  • Movement
  • Harmony
  • Unity

Contrast
- Differences in values, colours, textures, shapes and other elements
- Create visual excitement
- Add interest

Gestalt Theory

  • Figure-Ground
  • Similarity
  • Proximity
  • Continuity
  • Closure

WEEK 1- Gestalt and Contrast

GESTALT

Visual Research

Figure 1.5 from Pinterest

I did some research on Pinterest and searched for some designs about Gestalt Theory. The images above are some of the designs that caught my eyes. Figure 1.2 is one of my favourite designs. It is a simple design with Gestalt Theory applied to it.

Idea Exploration

Idea #1

Figure 2.0 from Pinterest

I saw this image when I was scrolling through Pinterest last weekend. After that, I have an idea that I could combine the eyeball and a human head as both of them are in the same shape.

Idea #2

Figure 2.1 from Pinterest

This image is from Pinterest too. I found it when I was researching the topic of Gestalt Theory. I then have an idea of combining figure 2.0 and figure 2.1 with changing the eyelashes into buildings.

Figure 2.2 Sketches

These are my sketches of combining an eye and a man from the back view. There is an overlapping part which is the eyeball and the human head. I was also experimenting with the colour combination by darkening some parts of the object. For example, I did a comparison of the man's shirt (white vs black).

The man is also looking forward to the direction of a city with many tall buildings. Hence, I wanted to title this artwork as "future" as the man is longing for city life.

Idea #3

Besides, I also thought of adding the theory of continuity in Gestalt Theory to this artwork. This idea was inspired by Figure 1.2. Hence, I add some lines around the main objects.

CONTRAST

Visual Research

Figure 3.3 from Pinterest

Figure 3.4 from Pinterest

I spent some time researching "contrast" on Pinterest. Figure 3.0 to figure 3.4 are some of the images that can show contrast clearly in their artwork.

Idea Exploration

Idea #1

Figure 4.0 from Pinterest

"Yin and Yang" concept is suitable for this exercise because we are assigned to use black and white paper to complete this exercise.

Idea #2

Figure 4.1 from Pinterest

I like how they present the symmetry of the butterfly. The usage of black and white colours on the opposite side of one another created a contrast in the artwork.

Figure 4.2 Initial sketch

After that, I have an idea of drawing a penguin and dividing it into half.

Figure 4.3 Penguin

This image is the reference I used to decide the colour positions for my penguin.

Figure 4.4 Final sketch

Figure 4.5 First outcome

Done cutting out a penguin (Figure 4.5) but I realized that the background is empty. Hence, I thought of adding some "snow" to this artwork. I then added tiny black and white dots to create a contrast with the background.

FEEDBACK

Week 1
General feedback
Can try to explore more about Gestalt Theory.
Create different artwork and identify the principle present in the artwork.

BRIEF REFLECTION

I have a better understanding of Gestalt Theory and contrast after week 1. I found that both of these topics are interesting and always reflect in our daily life. I did also enjoy the process of creating both of the designs. Looking forward to the next exercise!
