LECTURES

Week 3:

This week's lecture started with the discussion of the topic of repetition and movement. Dr. Charles asked us to tell him the meaning of repetition and movement from our point of view. After that, Dr. Charles went to take out his watercolors and painted them on white and black papers to show us more about repetition and movement. After that. Dr. Charles gave some verbal feedback on our week 2's exercises.

    - increase visual excitement
  • Movement
    - path that eye follow
    - seem moving
    - can be more than 1
  • Hierarchy
    - choreography
    - communicate information
    - convey meaning
    - direct viewers to the most important information

WEEK 3 - REPETITION & MOVEMENT

Repetition

Visual Research

Figure 2.3 from Pinterest

I did some research on Pinterest and found amazing images that show the principle of repetition.

Idea Exploration

Idea #1

Figure 3.0 from Dr. JinChi's Pre-recorded Lecture

All of the pigeons are coloured in yellow, although they are not having in the same shape. Hence, it can show the repetition of colours in this artwork. After that, I have an idea that an object and be repeated in shape and colours.

Idea #2

I have an idea of using the quaver as a repetitive object for this exercise. I draw a quaver and cut it out, then use it to trace the outline of the quaver with different positions on A4 paper so that it shows repetition in my artwork.

Figure 3.1 Process

For the background, I have the idea of drawing curved lines. The repetition of curved lines represents the sound waves.

Figure 3.2 Process

After that, I colour the quavers using black-coloured pastel and the curved lines using watercolours.

Final Design

Figure 3.4 Final repetition outcome

I love music and I can't live without music. Hence, I used musical note (quaver) as a repetitive object. The curved lines at the background represent the sound waves. I coloured them in rainbow colours because I think they can represent natural music.

Movement

Visual Research

I also did some research on Pinterest for the design principle of movement.

Idea Exploration

Idea #1

I was inspired by Figure 4.3. The flow is going downward and I thought of the chocolate fountain after that. I have the idea of doing a "flowing down" movement for this exercise.

Idea #2

Later on, I have the idea of replacing the chocolate with honey. Moreover, the honey will be flowing down from the honey pot (inspired by Winnie the Pooh) to spoons.

Figure 5.2 Draft

I think that the artwork is too empty if the honey only flows down to one spoon. Hence, I try to sketch out another design that has 2 spoons.

Figure 5.3 Sketch

Figure 5.3 is the final sketch for this exercise. After that, I decided to colour this artwork using watercolours.

FEEDBACK

Add more texture to the honey

BRIEF REFLECTION

I think that this week's exercises were interesting. I did enjoy doing the exercises for the week. Besides, I had a better understanding of repetition and movement after I completed the exercises. However, I think that the exercise for movement is slightly harder than repetition. This is because I think that it was hard to create a unique movement design. I also spent more time exploring the topic of movement compared to repetition.
