LECTURES

Week 2:
This week's lecture started with the introduction of composition. For basic composition, we learned about the focal point, scale and hierarchy, balance of the elements, and white space. These will help us to create a more neat and more eye-catching design. Besides, we also learned about the rule of thirds. We can place the most important elements of the image at the intersection points. This will help to position the object at a more attractive point for viewers. Other than that, the golden ratio was the composition that impressed me. It is a natural-looking composition but it can reflect aesthetic through harmony.

Week 3:
Mr. Martin started this week's lecture by introducing the lasso tool and pen tool in Adobe Photoshop. After that, he asked us to download an anime cat picture so that we can try the lasso tool together with him. There are 3 types of lasso tools in Adobe Photoshop, which include the lasso tool, polygonal lasso tool and magnetic lasso tool. Later on, we learned about layering and it is very helpful for the digital collage exercise. Mr. Martin also did some reviews on our week 2 work, which is the collage elements. He also went through our artwork one by one and gave us some feedback.

Week 4:
We learned about the adjustment layer and filters this week. Mr. Martin taught us about highlight, mid-tone and shadow. When the contrast is increased we can difference these 3 parts easily. Besides, we learned about other adjustment layers such as brightness, hue, saturation, vibrance, curves, level and selective colour. All of them are non-destructive image editing tools. For filters, it can cause more changes to the artwork. Most importantly, have fun.

Week 2 - Collage Elements

For this exercise, we are required to design a physical collage and compose it into our own concept and story. We are also required to take 3 photos of our collage pre-composition.
I try to collect all the old magazines and brochures that are available at home. I flip through all the pages and mark up some of the elements that I think I can use for this exercise. After gathering all the elements, I cut them out from the magazines and arranged them on black paper.

I decided to go for the theme of "PRESENT" and the reason I chose this theme is because I would like to record my feelings at this moment. The buildings reflect that I miss traveling around. I hope that we could travel freely after this pandemic. Besides, I choose to add some wordings such as "you will", "welcome" and "design". This is because I would like to record the beginning of my design journey. I am also happy that I could start up this journey with all the interesting exercises.

Week 3 - Digital Collage

We are assigned to use given images to create 3 digital collages using Adobe Photoshop.

Composition #1
Figure 3.0 Digital collage 1, 15.4.2021

For composition 1, I got the idea of having a circle at the center. After that, I tried to add some plants around it so it can pop out more. I added some elements such as building and typewriter at the top to balance the train at the bottom.

Composition #2
Figure 3.1 Digital collage 2, 15.4.2021
Composition #3
Figure 3.2 Digital collage 3, 16.4.2021

For composition 2 and 3, I wanted to make the betta fish and people looking at that fish as the focal point. Hence, I tried to make a more simplified design, which is composition 2 (Figure 3.1) compared to composition 1. I used lesser elements in composition 2 so that the design will be less crowded. After that, I made another similar composition, which is composition 3. It has a lighter colour combination compared to composition 2.

Week 4 - Digital Collage

We have to choose one of the digital collages that we have done in week 3 to add adjustment layers and filters.

Figure 3.1 Digital Collage 2, 21.4.2021

I chose composition 2 to continue with this week's practical.

Figure 4.0 First attempt, 21.4.2021

Figure 4.0 is the first outcome. However, I think that the I didn't change things much. I feel that I still can add more adjustment layers and filters so that my design will be more attractive.

Figure 4.1 Second attempt, 21.4.2021

I tried to turn down all the colour tones to the darker one (black/brown) except for the betta fish and people because I wanted them to be the focal point. However, I don't really like this outcome because I think that everything becomes too dark and feel like they are all crowded in the design. Hence, I decided to work back on the first attempt and improve on it.

Figure 4.2 Third outcome, 21.4.2021

I changed the hue of the plant at the top right corner. Besides, I changed the brightness and contrast of the people and the vending machine. With that, I think the design looks more balance compared to the first outcome (Figure 4.0). I think that I still don't have enough explorations on adjustment layers and filters plus they are very challenging. Hence, I will still try to "play" with all of them so that I can be more similar to the adjustment layers and filters.

FEEDBACK

Week 2: Collage Elements
Mr. Martin commented that my artworks consist of hierarchy. There are also texts and backgrounds in all 3 of the pre-compositions. It feels like cuti-cuti Malaysia but it is Japan. He also said that he prefers pre-composition 2 and 3.

Week 3: Digital Collage
Mr. Martin said that my composition have a lot of things but it is not crowded. The first composition is totally different to composition 2 and 3. If I want to play around with the adjustment layers and filters, composition 1 will provide a better opportunity because it has many layers. Composition 2 has lesser elements but the design is already there.

Week 4: Digital Collage
Mr. Martin said that I can rotate the vending machine so that it more sense.

REFLECTIONS

I did enjoy doing project 1. I learned more about collages and I started to love it more and more now. Besides, I had a better understanding of collages after completing project 1. I would try to explore more about adjustment layers and effects in Adobe Photoshop. I hope I can master the tools in Adobe Photoshop soon. Lastly, I would be looking forward to the next project!
