LECTURES

Week 5:
The title for this week's lecture is Poster Design Development. A poster can help us to convey information to the target audience. Besides, it also helps in creating awareness on an issue. After that, we are introduced to project 2 which is to create a poster on the issue of refugees in Malaysia. We are required to research this topic before we start to design the poster. Later on, Mr. Martin also showed us a video about refugees in Malaysia.

Week 6:
Mr. Martin started this week's class by giving us feedback on our blog updates and the summary of our research on the topic of refugees in Malaysia. After that, Mr. Martin continues this week's lecture with the topic of poster design execution. We have to first define our concept for the poster to evokes the viewer's feeling and deliver a strong impression. Mr. Martin showed us some poster examples and asked us to define the concept of the posters.

Week 7:
The title of this week's lecture is Color Theory. We learned about the difference between RGB (used to display on a computer screen) and CMYK (for printing). Besides, we learned about hue (pure color), shade (add black), tint (add grey) and tone (add white). We did some discussion on monochromatic, color harmony, analogous, complementary, split- complementary and triadic. After that, we are required to update our progress on project 2.

Week 5 - Photo Manipulation

For this exercise, we are required to watch a pre-recorded video and follow it step-by-step to learn about photo manipulation. We are given 2 pictures which include the shazam and Hearst mansion. We need to photoshop shazam to the Hearst mansion. Besides, we are required to photoshop ourselves into the Hearst mansion too. We are required to take a photo that matches the angle from eye level and photoshop ourselves into the heart mansion.

Project 2B
Summary

"A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee his or her country because of persecution, war or violence. A refugee has a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in particular social group. Most likely, they cannot return home or are afraid to do so. War and ethnic, tribal ad religious violence are leading causes of refugees fleeing their countries." is the definition given by United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Besides, the UNHCR is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people.

I had been working for a project that help refugees in Malaysia back in 2019 for 3 months and I think that many Malaysians are lacking in knowledge regarding refugees including myself before I joined that project. Malaysians usually relate refugees to people who need help and support but did not know the real definition of a refugee. Moreover, Malaysian always perceive refugees as an issue for our country due to their negative perceptions towards refugees.

Refugees in Malaysia do not have access to legal documentation, education, healthcare and they are seen as a threat in Malaysia. Many people think that they do not deserve the protection, freedom, access to proper healthcare, education and sufficient work opportunities with the reason of they are not citizens of Malaysia. However, the refugees need these circumstances to sustain a better life here in Malaysia, while they escape the danger from their home countries.

Furthermore, numerous non-governmental organizations such as Asylum Access, SHELTER and Tenaganita are working on various campaigns to fight for the rights of refugees, but the lack of awareness in the society inhibits these efforts from achieving its maximum effect. Hence, more help and support should be given to them so that they could ease the burden of the refugees who are in constant fear.

I would like my poster to look like the 3 posters below.

Figure 1.0 from Pinterest

Figure 1.1 from Pinterest

Figure 1.2 from Pinterest

I like Figure 1.0 because I like the layering of human faces. For figure 1.1 I like the double exposure effect and the crowded people at the bottom are wishing for freedom which is represented by the bird above them. Besides, I like the illustration of figure 1.2 that shows that they are blocked by the fence and wanted to escape.

Final Design

Figure 4.4 Final Poster 'Hope', 30.5.2021

This is a poster with the composition of 2 refugee kids. The focus of the title is 'HERE' and 'HOPE' because I think that their eyes can talk. Both of them have different facial expressions but I think that both of them are having 'HOPE' in their eyes. 'HERE' means here in Malaysia, which can be linked to the fence. Most of the refugees are blocked from entering other countries. However, most people do not understand why they are here. Hence, I designed this poster to raise awareness of refugee issues with the slogan of 'spread the word and raise awareness'. I hope that Malaysians could pay more attention to refugee issues. Refugees deserve to have human rights too.

FEEDBACK
Week 6:
Mr. Martin said that I need to combine the exercises with the project 2 blog. Besides, I need to add more description to my examples.

Week 7:
Mr. Martin said that my progress is great and continue with the progress to create a digitalize poster. However, the source image that I show is a bit too low in quality. I have to find a better one.

Week 10:
Mr. Martin said that the title of 'FOR REFUGEE' is too general and could not convert the message. Poster 2 is not working also. Besides, the poster needs more negative space so I could remain with 2 kids only. "Less is more".

For Figure 4.0 and 4.1, Mr. Martin said that he is concerned about the focus and size. The toodle size is bigger than the teenage girl. Besides, the toodle very warm and the girl is neutral/slightly cold. Besides, I could modify the title. The HERE and HOPE should not have the texture so they are easier to read. 'They are' and 'for' one group, 'HERE' and 'HOPE' one group.

REFLECTION
I learned a lot throughout project 2, especially information on refugees throughout the research. Besides, I enjoyed doing this project because I think that I am doing some sort of charity. I hope that I can help them to raise the voice and raise awareness. Lastly, I would like to thank Mr. Martin for giving me advices throughout the project and he also arranged a talk for us to have a better understanding of refugees in Malaysia.
