LECTURES

Week 6:
Ms. Anis briefed us about project 2. We have to capture the iconic moments and create an aminated minimalist poster. After that, Ms. Anis also showed us some examples of ex-students' work.

PRACTICAL

Week 6:
Mr. Kannan taught us simple animation using Adobe Photoshop. We are briefed step-by-step to create a simple animation. We are also recommended to 12 principles of amination.

Project 2 - Decisive Moment

Week 6

We are required to design a poster of a decisive moment of a published media such as movies, animation, books and comics. Before I start to do project 2, I watched a video that introduces about 12 principles of animation. Then, I decided to do a poster about the drama 'Money Heist'. Hence, I went to watch some summary videos of 'Money Heist' to recall back my memories about this drama series. Before I sketch out my ideas, I tried to research different minimalist movie posters.

I decided to use the moment when the police trying to enter.

I decided to use this scene to create my poster.

Week 7

I sketch out some elements of the poster.

Week 8

I draw out my poster draft using the digital sketching app. I chose to centralize all the elements in the poster. I decided to use a circle as the focal point of the poster.  Typeface: Impact

Figure 8.0 Draft, 17.5.2021

I illustrate the main element using Adobe Illustrator.

Figure 8.1 Main element, 17.5.2021

After that, I transferred 2 jpegs to Adobe Photoshop and create a frame animation.

Figure 8.2 Simple GIF, 17.5.2021

I send Ms. Anis the draft and simple GIF for some feedback. (Feedback 1)

I then continue to illustrate different layers in Adobe Illustrator.

After that, I save them as jpeg and transfer them to Adobe Photoshop to create frame animation.

Figure 8.5 First GIF outcome, 18.5.2021

I think that the GIF is moving too fast. Hence, I added delay to every frame.

Week 9

I illustrate the building using Adobe Illustrator too.

Later, I transfer the building to Adobe Photoshop.

Figure 9.2 Second GIF outcome, 23.5.2021

I think that my GIF is not smooth enough. Hence, I tried to add more frames to create a smoother animation.

I think that my animation is still not smooth enough. I prefer a smoother animation. Therefore, I changed to the video timeline.

Figure 9.7 Design 1 second outcome, 25.5.2021

I got some feedback from Mr. Kannan in class. (Feedback 2) Hence, I decided to change my poster design.

Figure 9.8 Feedback, 27.5.2021

I decided to move the building backward and change my poster to a horizontal poster.

Figure 9.9 Design 2, 27.5.2021

Following this, I add some light effects at the back, which are also shown in the scene I selected. Blue and red lights are the police car siren lights. Besides. I also added some shadows to the artwork.

Later on, my friend thinks that the scene did not shoot at last so she gave me an idea of adding a scope view to indicate that both sides are aiming. Hence, I designed another poster, which is my Design 3.

Figure 10.0 Design 3, 28.5.2021

I think that design 3 can have a more simplistic animation compared to design 1 and 2. The hand of the person is not moving and I think that it is very hard to find a nice arc for the bullets if the hand is moving.

Figure 10.1 Design 3 first GIF outcome, 28.5.2021

I send Figure 9.8 and Figure 10.1 to Ms. Anis and Ma. Kannan for some feedback. (Feedback 3 and 4)

After that, I continue to do some modifications to my poster design 2 and 3. I blurred and darken the background.

Figure 10.2 Design 3 second GIF outcome, 29.5.2021

I think that the scope view ended not so smoothly. Hence, I modified the placement of the scope view and make it smoother.

Figure 10.3 Design 3 third GIF outcome, 29.5.2021

After that, I realized that the bottom part is a bit empty. Besides, I was not satisfied with the title design. Hence, I wanted to add the Spanish name of the drama series, which is 'La casa de papel'. I researched  the name of the drama series and I realized that there is a logo for this drama series.

Figure 10.4 Logo

Typeface: Haettenschweiler. I decided to change the font colors so that the title can have contrast.

Figure 10.5 Design 3 final GIF outcome, 29.5.2021

Following that, I tried to modify similar elements in design 2 too. I blurred and darken the background. Besides, I added shadows and filters to the GIF.

Figure 10.6 Design 2 second GIF outcome, 29.5.2021

I think that the siren lights are changing too fast. Therefore, I did some modifications to them.

I chose design 2 as the final design for project 2 because I hope that I could remain to express the scene of lifting the bullet. Besides, I like the text arrangement and placement of design 2.

FEEDBACK
  1. Ms. Anis said that my draft and simple GIF look ok.
  2. Mr. Kannan said that for design 1, I can move the building backward and darken the background. Besides, I can change my animation to a shooting burst. (Figure 9.8) I can also add some sirens to the bank.
  3. Ms. Anis said that all 3 designs look good.
  4. Mr. Kannan said that design 2 and 3 (Figure 9.11 and 10.1) are sufficient but maybe I can darken and blur the background a little.

REFLECTION

This was an interesting project and I love this project. I was able to learn a lot throughout project 2. It is a bit challenging because I was quite new to animation. This project required us to capture a decisive moment, which I think is the hardest part for me. This is because I think that I often forget the storyline of a movie or drama after I completed watching them. To do this project, I also rewatch some of the episodes of 'Money Heist' to get some ideas from there. Besides, I also struggled with the animation. At first, I could not find the best arc for the animation. After several attempts, I managed to fix it but I think I can still improve on that. Lastly, I enjoy doing project 2 and I am happy with my final outcome.
