LECTURES

Week 6
Mr. Vinod started this week's lecture by giving us some feedback on our task 2 progression. After that, students went into breakout rooms to give some feedback to other student's work. Meanwhile, Mr. Vinod and Mr. Shamsul went to mark our task 1 and gave us feedback on our blog.

Typographic Exploration & Communication

Week 6

We are required to watch a pre-recorded video to get to more know about things that we need to complete in task 2. This task included type expression and type formatting. We have to express one of the words in the headline. Headlines, titles and texts are given in the Facebook group.

At first, I decided to express the word impact. I used Adobe Illustrator to warp the word 'impact'.

I think that the arrangement of words is a bit packed and weird. Hence, I tried different arrangements.

Figure 6.1 Second type expression, 3.5.2021

I think that only the type expression I cannot imagine the final outcome of my design with other texts. Hence, I tried to export my type expression design to Adobe InDesign and continue with the type formatting part.

I was not satisfied with the headline expression. Thus, I tried to express another word which is 'Bauhaus'.

Figure 6.4 Third type expression, 3.5.2021

I think that the third outcome is better than the first and second outcome. I then continue to improve on the third outcome.

Week 7

Mr. Vinod gave me some feedback so I did some changes to my design. I changed the subtitle and the subtext to left-aligned because it can kind of help to express Bauhaus.

FEEDBACK

Week 6
Specific Feedback:
Mr. Vinod: The text spacing and arrangement are very awkward. If he has to choose he will choose Figure 6.0 or Figure 6.4 compared to Figure 6.1.
Breakout room: There is cross alignment. Try to keep the text with the same type family and improve on the headline.
General Feedback:
Show evidence for every work.

Week 7
Specific Feedback:
Mr. Vinod said that the subheading is better if it is left aligned. Besides, I should keep the subtext in one column.

Week 9
Specific Feedback:
Mr. Vinod: Good job on task 2. Well done on the expression and arrangement.

REFLECTION

Experience:
I think that I have to improve on type expression. The type expressions done by other classmates are eye-catching. Hence, I tried different designs for the word that I want to express.

Observations:
I realize that my designs for type expression are too common. To achieve a better design, I have to try several attempts.

Findings:
The trial and error processes are very important.

FURTHER READING

Figure 6.9 Typographic design: Form and communication from Taylor's Library, 10.5.2021

I read the chapter "The Typographic Grid" in this book. Grids help to create a clearer and more accessible communication design. Designers often rely upon an innate sense of proportion. I also found out that modular grids are interesting.
