LECTURES

Week 8
Independent learning week

Week 9
Mr. Vinod and Mr. Shamsul gave us some feedback on our progress on task 3A. After that, we are given time to improve on task 3A. At the same time, Mr. Vinod and Mr. Shamsul went to mark our task 2.

Week 10
Mr. Vinod and Mr. Shamsul gave us some feedback on our progress on task 3A. After that, we are given time to create the poster during the practical session. Later on, Mr. Vinod and Mr. Shamsul briefed us about task 3B.

Type Design & Communication

Week 8

We are required to watch a pre-recorded video to get to more know about things that we need to complete in task 3(a). I started by sketching out some ideas on my iPad.

Figure 8.0 Sketches, 22.5.2021

After that, I want to illustrate the left top sketch using Adobe Illustrator.

Figure 8.1 First outcome, 22.5.2021
Figure 8.2 Second outcome, 22.5.2021

I tried to create a rectangular typeface. However, I suddenly have an idea of tried to create another rounder san-serif typeface.

Figure 8.3 Sketch, 22.5.2021

I think that the similar typeface for my sketch is the Univers LT Std (Condensed). Hence, I try to study that typeface.

After that, I started to construct my typeface in Adobe Illustrator following my sketches. (Figure 8.3)

Week 9

Mr. Shamsul said that my typeface is similar to the typeface of Optima. Hence, I tried to study and deconstruct the fonts in Optima.

I did some modifications to my letters. I try to fix my letter 'a' first. I follow Mr. Vinod's feedback and try to modify my letter 'a'.

After that, I did some changes to the letter 'm' using figure 9.0 as a reference.

Figure 9.4 Comparison of letter 'm', 30.5.2021

I was quite satisfied with the outcomes. Hence, I move on to modify the letter 't'.

Besides, I did some modifications to the comma ',' too. I struggled in reconstructing the comma. I did many changes to the comma.

Later on, I rearrange the letters according to the sequence of A to Z.

Next, we are required to watch a pre-recorded video to learn how to import our fonts into FontLab. I downloaded FontLab 7. I named my font 'Ordinary'.

I tried to express the word 'empty' using the type I designed.

Week 10

After getting feedback from Mr. Vinod and Mr. Shamsul, I did some modifications to my type design.

I then transfer the typeface from illustrator to FontLab 7.

After we generated our typeface, we are required to design a poster with the sentence "i am a type god, obey me!"

FEEDBACK

Week 9
Specific Feedback:
Mr. Vinod: Letter 'a' feels like falling down so can try to fix it by shorten the stroke or move the round part below the baseline a little bit. The letter 't' cross bar should be thinner. Work on the letter 'm', ',' and '.'. I need to explore and study more. I can take a look at the optima typeface.
General Feedback:
All sketches should be already digitalized for this week.

Week 10
Specific Feedback:
Mr. Vinod said that the letter 't' should not reach the ascender, the tail part needs to go in a bit and the dots and comma needs to be bigger.
General Feedback:
Consistent typeface with some minor issues. Beginning to understand it.

REFLECTION

Experience:
I have fun doing this task but I struggled in the middle of the process of task 3A. This is because I think that my design is not as 'special' as other classmates. However, I was quite satisfied with my outcome but just not confident about it.

Observations:
I think that we need to study a lot of different typefaces to construct a new typeface. For example, some types may look symmetry but they are not. We have to deconstruct them to see the details. Besides, I was also impressed by all the different designs done by other classmates.

Findings:
At first, I thought to design a new typeface is not complicated. However, it is more difficult than I thought. Type design takes more time than I expected. Besides, sketches are important in designing a new type design.

FURTHER READING

Figure 8.8 The Art of Type and Typography, 23.5.2021

I think that I have to know more about the history of type to construct a new type. Hence, I read the first chapter from this book 'A Brief History of the Alphabet and Type'. The transformations of typography are all related. Many attempts had been made to combine photography and typesetting.

Figure 9.11 Typography Essentials, 29.5.2021

I read the chapter of 'the letter'. There are different usage of type. A strong typographic personality can be good for expression. Besides, the emphasis on type can be present using different weights, sizes and comparisons of contrast.
