Digital Photography and Imaging
Final Project / Self-Titled

LECTURES

Week 11:
This week's lecture is about digital photography. The lecture is divided into 2 parts which are exposure setting and lens perspective. In exposure settings, iris, shutter speed, and ISO are related to adjust the exposure of an image. The smaller the f-number, the larger the lens opening, the brighter the image. The faster the shutter speed, the darker the image. The lower the number of ISO, the less sensitive the camera to light, the darker the image. In lens perspective, the short the focal length, the wider the angle of view.

Week 12:
This week's lecture is about double exposure. Mr. Martin provides us some images to work on to make sure we understand double exposure. After that, Mr. Martin gave us feedback on our progress for the final project.

Week 13:
This week's lecture is about digital surrealism. Mr. Martin taught us more about surrealism and I found out that it is quite interesting. After that, Mr. Martin provide us some images to try out parallax. Lastly, Mr. Martin gave us feedback on our final project's progress.

Biography

Tell us about yourself
I am 20 years old this year and I live in Seri Kembangan, Selangor. I am a student studying Bachelor of Design (Hons) in Creative.

What is your passion?
I was passionate about art and photography. I want to work as a designer in the future. Besides, I hope that I could express my point of view using different artwork.

What's motivating you to achieve your dream?
I love art and design since young. This was inspired by my art teacher back then. I think that artwork speaks more than words. For now, I would like to improve on my design sense.

How do you want to visualize your dream into an artwork?
I would like to visualize my dream with the things that had/have been a part of my life.

Statement

Tell us about your artwork
I would like to include the things that have brought me to where I am and who I am now. This includes the virtual objects as I think that I am living in my dream now.

What is the concept behind it?
Everyone told me that I have to study for a science-related degree because I achieved good results in science subjects. However, I chose a design degree because I was passionate about it. I might not achieve outstanding results in the design degree but I would like to learn more to achieve my dream.

What is the message you want people to understand it?
Explore the new possibilities in life. Have courage to chase your own dream and work hard on it.

What is your motto/quote?
You are a limited edition.

Design 2

For this poster, I wanted to design a surrealism poster. Hence, I have an idea of water flowing into my brain.

After I got the feedback from Mr. Martin, I matched the color of my portrait and added an adjustment layer to unite the elements in the poster.

Animation

My first thought is to animate the water, papers and bubble gum.

After that, I decided to add motion to the fog and the platforms at the back and they move horizontally.

Later on, I decided to add music to this animation. I also added the movement of paper planes following the background music.

Lastly, I added animation to the flowers and they are rotating in the same position.

After I received feedback from Mr. Martin, I decided to make some minor changes to the animation of papers.

Final Submission

Figure 5.1 Final Animation, 30.6.2021

The elements I used in this design include water, paper, paper planes, flowers, and bubble gum. The main element in this design is water. I used water as the main element in this design because water is consumed by us daily. Besides, water indicates knowledge in this design. Water is flowing into my head and watering the flowers indicates that I am still learning and growing. The papers are soaked in water which means my past. There are many science formulas and notes on the paper and this indicates that I used to be a science student. One of the papers is a music sheet because music is a very small part of my life. I gave up learning piano just to focus on my study and I regretted it after that. Not just that, I used bubble gum to present that I am flexible to do anything. The fog in this design also portrays that I am living in my dream because I think that I can pursue a design degree is still unreal for me. Lastly, this design includes paper planes because I have the freedom to decide 'what I want to do' and 'what I want to be' now. I named this design 'Limited Edition'. This is because I included my story in this design. Everyone has their own story in their life. My story would not be the most interesting one but it is a limited edition. I would say that I am living in my dream now because I still think that it is unreal for me to pursue a design degree. I am grateful to have the freedom to choose my own pathway and I will work hard on it.

FEEDBACK

Week 12:
The idea is good and continues with the progress

Week 13:
Mr. Martin said that the composition is interesting. Move the platforms slowly so they look like floating a little bit. The paper planes can move faster so can have contrast with other elements. Besides, the color and contrast of my portrait are not matching with other elements. Put an adjustment layer on top and after that work on the animation.

Week 14:
Mr. Martin said that I need to increase the saturation a bit and the animation of papers should be separated.

REFLECTION

I think that this project is a good opportunity to explore myself. Before this, I think that I have a hard time expressing myself or my story. However, I had expressed my thoughts on this project. At first, I had a hard time designing the poster because I do not know what I want to include in the poster. After that, I managed to sketch out my idea after I did some research. After completing several exercises provided by Mr. Martin, I managed to use Adobe Photoshop smoothly to create my work. For the animation part, it went on smoothly also but I think that I could still explore more on Adobe After Effects.
