Set design

  • everything the audience sees within a particular scene

Lighting

Props

Week 1

We are assigned to watch stop-motion shorts and shortlist 3 of them to share our thoughts.

  1. Under The Winter Sun

    Figure 1.0 Stop Motion #1, 27.8.2021

I would say this is a sweet but sad story. I chose this short film because I like that the idea of using simple props to direct a story to the viewer. This short film really hits me because at my age now, I think that friendship played a big part in my life. Besides, I like the use of background music because it also helped me to get into deeper emotion. I also like the idea of how the short film ended with how it started.

  2. Paper Plane

    Figure 1.1 Stop Motion #2, 27.8.2021

This is an MV for the song Paper Plane by Giangrande. I would say this video is my current favorite paper cut out stop motion video and I like this song as well. The story in this video might be a little confusing for the first time viewer, but eventually, it will be cleared up. I like the storyline of the main character went on an adventure with the bear, rabbit, turtle and the lively beats of the song. Besides, I also like the vintage colors chosen for this video, which I think this matches the folksy music.

  3. Fresh Guacamole

    Figure 1.2 Stop Motion #3, 27.8.2021

I would say this is a very satisfying video. I like the idea of turning the foods into other objects such as grenades, golf balls and casino tokens. Besides, I also like the part where every "cut" piece turns into dice that matches the color of the object. The dices have different sizes too. Not just that, the sound effects in this short film are amazing!

Stop Motion Proposal

Stop Motion Video
Because I'm doing Claymation, the preparation for this stop motion video shoot begins with the purchase of clay.

Figure 3.1 Clay, 28.10.2021

On Thursday, after the proposal has been approved, I decide to buy the clay. Mr. Martin then informed students that he would be going to studio the following Wednesday. As a result, I went to the university's studio for my first shoot.

After the first day of shooting, I realized that stop motion shooting is very time-consuming. Hence, I became aware of the situation and began to rearrange my schedule.

After that, I discussed to my friends about it and decided to book the studio for the following Friday. I only managed to complete 40% of the scenes after Friday's shooting. My friend I realised that we didn't have enough props at the same time. Afterward, we went out and bought some more clay.

I still realized I didn't have enough colors halfway through the shoot. As a result, I use acrylic to color the clay.

After I was done shooting, I used Adobe Premiere Pro to edit the video.

I realized I needed to reshoot some of the scene while editing.

I then began editing the footage and adding sound effects to the video.

FEEDBACK

Week 10
Mr. Martin said that the proposal is ok. Can add one more scene in between the cutting down trees and city building.

Week 13
Mr. Martin said that the progress is ok.

Week 14
Mr. Martin said that I can try to add the "dip to black" transition for different scenes and lower down the volume of the music.

REFLECTION

This was a fun project. This project is really fun to shoot and edit. Adjusting the lighting was one of the most difficult aspects of this project for me. Apart from that, clay modelling is enjoyable, and I appreciate Mr. Martin allowing us to choose our own theme for this project. Mr. Martin's feedback has been extremely beneficial to me in completing this project.
