4.1.2022 - 21.1.2022 (Week 1 - 2) Lew Se Win / 0347637 / Bachelor
of Design (Hons) in Creative Media Information Design Exercises
LECTURES
Week 1
LEC 01: Ms. Anis and Mr. Martin give us a rundown of the
exercises and project details. We were then given time to begin working on
exercise 1.
LEC 02: Introduction to information visualisation
We live in a visual information culture. In no other time in history has there
been such an explosion of visual images.
Figure 1.0 Visualising Information, 6.1.2022
Goals of visualising information:
reveal the intricacy of the world in uncomplicated terms that are simple
to comprehend
add knowledge to the information it displays through spatial,
quantitative, and chronological relationships
After that, we were being brief about FLIP classroom.
Week 2
Saul Wurman’s L.A.T.C.H
L.A.T.C.H is a method of information organisation that consist of
these principles:
L - Location
A - Alphabet
T - Time
C - Category
H - Hierarchy
INSTRUCTIONS
Exercise 1: Quantifiable Information
We are required to quantify raw data and visualise as a photograph. Ms. Anis
gave us her buttons in class, and we had to arrange them on an A4 piece of
paper.

Figure 1.2 Progress, 4.1.2022
I then have an idea of arranging the buttons to the shape of flowers.

Exercise 2: L.A.T.C.H
We are required to organise a group of information into a visual poster that
combined and utilises the LATCH principles (min. 4).
My initial thought is to do something on the topic of unicorns. However, I
realise that the unicorn is a mythological creature, and the information
available is insufficient to meet the requirements of the LATCH theory. Due to
a lack of time, I decided not to waste time researching other topics and
instead focus on the Pokemon topic.
My first thought was to choose Pokemon from four different types and
generations so that I could work on the arrangements as following the
generations.
Figure 2.1.0 Informations, 15.1.2022
After that, I started to download the monsters online.
Figure 2.1.1 Pokemon, 15.1.2022
Later on, I started to work on sketches.
Figure 2.1.2 Sketch, 16.1.2022
Figure 2.1.3 Progress, 16.1.2022
Later, I began to work on sketches. I then try to do some research
on colour schemes for this poster. I wanted to resemble the elemental colour of
Pokemon and I do not want the colours to be too bright. Hence, I decided to use
soft colours.

Following that, I'd like to have a square island.

After finishing the location illustrations, the next step will be to
organise the information.

PRACTICAL
Week 1: 3 Professional Motion Graphics
We are required to watch motion graphics on youtube and recommend 3 motion
graphics with rationals and inspirations.
Figure 1.1.0 Motion Graphics #1, 8.1.2022
Twitch // TimTheTatMan's Legend. This motion graphic's transitions and
illustration style appeal to me. The transitions are smooth and
effectively connect the scenes. Furthermore, the illustration style is
clear, with solid, smooth lines. This motion graphic's voice-over seems to
be fantastic because it creates an atmosphere in which I feel as if I am
living in it.
Figure 1.1.1 Motion Graphics #2, 8.1.2022
Tencent Wesee - Lucky Ox from Flatwhite Motion on Vimeo. This is a motion
graphic piece created to commemorate the Year of the Ox. Many designers
collaborated to create this motion graphic, which also includes a variety
of unique animation styles. This motion graphic's changing style also
works well with the music and sound effects. I like how they integrate
different styles, combining 2D and 3D graphics to create this motion
graphically.
Figure 1.1.2 Motion Graphics #3, 8.1.2022
2020 Vision Get Wild Award | 放視大賞 from Bito on Vimeo. In my opinion,
this is a pure and stunning motion graphic. I like how the motion
interacts with the background music. In addition, the grain texture
applied to the gradient-colored geometric shapes is one of my favorite art
styles. The paper texture was also used by the designers in some of the
scenes. This motion graphic also makes use of some stunning
typography.
Week 4 Practical - Vector / Character Animation
We are required to watch another video to learn about vector/character animation in Adobe After Effect. We started by separating the layers in Adobe Illustrator.

FEEDBACK
Week 1 Ms. Anis :"nice, ok to submit."
REFLECTION
Exercising is fun and interesting. It's a great way to get this module
started. Although it is quite a rush to complete one exercise in a week, it is
still satisfying to see the outcomes.
