LECTURES

Week 4
AMERICA’S MISINFORMATION CRISIS - TOM PATTERSON
  • Misinformation: False information that is held or spread, regardless of intent.
  • Disinformation: False information that is spread with the intent to mislead.
  • Demand Side: Although human psychology hasn’t changed, party polarization has heightened demand for misinformation & our response to it
  • Supply-side: Rise of partisan and social media and breakdown of norms against lying have resulted in a dramatic increase in the supply of misinformation
As designers, we also have a responsibility to keep the right distribution of correct information to your audience.

Party Polarisation
  • Cue-taking: Our tendency to accept at face value claims made by our party leaders and by like-minded media sources
  • Confirmation Bias: Our psychological tendency to interpret claims in ways that fit our partisan beliefs and biases
WHY?
Changes in Media System
  1. An “information commons”
  2. Rising level of information
  3. “Depolarization”
In 1987, the Fairness Doctrine was eliminated

INSTRUCTIONS

Project 1: Instructable Infographic
We are required to choose and study one video from Pasta Grannies Youtube channel. With that video, we need to create an infographic poster for that selected recipe. Hence, I began to watch some of the videos on that channel. Finally, I chose the video titled "Pasta Grannies share Nonna Igea's timballo from Abruzzo." Granny Igea shares her recipe for timballo in this video. I chose this video because I love lasagna and realised her recipe is similar to lasagna. Aside from that, I was drawn to Igea's endearing personality. She appears friendly and excited as she shares her recipe.

After that, I started to work on the break down of the processes.

The sketches gave me a better idea of how to organise the process. However, at the moment, I'm struggling to fit all of the steps into the poster in the correct order while also having a nice arrangement for this poster.

Still struggling... Therefore, I tried to arrange the elements on a square art board.

Even so, I realise that the vertical one will be more suitable for me to fit in the entire process.

Moving on to the colours. I looked up some colour schemes online so that my timballo would look yummy.

Inspired by Igea's cabinet as well as table cloth colours and patterns, I decided to implement them into the background of my poster.

Figure 4.4 First Outcome, 7.2.2022

Because of the colour used, I was dissatisfied with the first outcome. I decided to darken the background colour and add texture to make my elements stand out. Next, I divided the procedure into two parts: crepes and fillings.

Figure 4.5 Second Outcome, 9.2.2022

I feel like the fillings section can be further divided into sauce, meat and cheese. The " ≥ 5 layers" is blocking on the stack of different layers. Besides, the lines could be more organised and clear. Hence, I tried on different arrangements.

FEEDBACK

Week 6

Ms Anis: "nice design (Figure 4.5) but not sure about the '≥ 5 layers' and remember to add the source". Ms Anis then suggested me to change to red colour for the "≥ 5 layers".

REFLECTION

I like the process of breakdown the steps in the video. Although this requires us to rewatch the video several times, I still like to observed on the little things mentioned in the video. Besides, I do enjoy doing the illustrations. Aside from that, I enjoy doing the illustrations. However, I believe I could do a better job of adding shadows and highlights to the illustrations.
