INSTRUCTIONS

Task 2: Data Collection
For data collection, we have divided ourselves into three groups: film study, site visit, and interview.

Dorcas, Amber, and I will be in charge of the site visit. First, we conducted an extensive research and proposed landmarks in Klang Valley that have or similar to Wes Anderson's style. After that, we decided to narrow it down to the landmarks in Kuala Lumpur during the research process.

Simultaneously, we discussed the dates on which all group members are available. Following that, we decided to travel on January 21, 2022. (Friday). We thought it would be impossible to visit all of the landmarks during the planning process. As a result, we chose the top ten landmarks and planned to visit at least eight of them on that day. The site visit team selected ten landmarks based on the following criteria:
  • buildings/locations with a rich history background or architectural influences
  • buildings/locations that face the risk of being abolished due to urbanisation
  • heritage sites owned by government that are not maintained, left abandoned
  • have Wes Anderson's aesthetic to a certain extend, meaning symmetrical shots can be attained, color palettes similar to Wes Anderson
Top 10 Landmarks
  • LPS Pawagam Coliseum
  • DBKL Theatre
  • Loke Chow Kit Mansion
  • Malaysian Industrial Court
  • Old OCBC Court
  • Central Market
  • Bunn Choon Restoran
  • KL Railway Station
  • Carcosa Seri Negara
  • Kedai

Before we travel, we realise we have a problem with a lack of equipment. Hence, we decided to borrow a tripod, a camera, a wide-angle lens, and batteries from Mr. Martin.

However, Mr. Martin warned us that the tripod and wide-angle lens are heavy. With that, we decided to use our own tripod instead of borrowing the school's one and only borrow a DSRL, a lens and 2 batteries.

During the site visit, we studied the landmarks and photographed them for our upcoming guidebook for the final project. Not only that, but we also shot some short video for some of the landmarks to use as an additional source for the final project. While walking around Kuala Lumpur, we also came across many buildings with Wes Anderson's style or characteristics.

Most of the places we visited were not open to the public. We can only see the buildings' exteriors. On that day, we also made it to all of the planned locations and went to 2 more unplanned landmarks, which are the Carcosa Seri Nagera and Kedai.

Everything went smoothly on the day we went for the site visit. Good weather and everything went with the flow, except we got chased away by people working in Central Market while we were attempting to take more pictures there because they said that we must have approval before taking pictures there. Everyone was also exhausted after visiting the majority of the locations.

Here are some of the pictures I took during the site visit.

Moving on to the preparation of presentation slides. I will be in charge of selecting photos from all of the photos taken by the group members during the site visit.

Besides, we documented some of the points in the slide, such as the characteristics of the building and the difficulties we encountered when visiting that location.

After that, we also divided the presentation into 7 parts, and I will be presenting on 4 landmarks, which include Central Market, Restoran Bunn Choon, KL Railway Station, and Carcosa Seri Negara.

FEEDBACK

Week 4

Ms. Anis said that we should start working on the art direction for the guidebook. Besides, Ms. Anis also said that 9 landmarks are good enough and we should come out a title that reflects the similarities of the 9 locations, research objectives and research problem.

REFLECTION

This is the first time I've done an outdoor project! This is a fun experience travelling around Kuala Lumpur to observe landmarks and capture similarities between them and Wes Anderson's style. Sadly, one of our group members will be unable to join us due to a booster shoot appointment. Overall, I enjoy doing research and exploring different locations, and lastly, paying a visit to them.
