Week 5 Mr. Vinod briefed us about Task 2(A). We are assigned to create a key artwork
using our name. It is a way to express ourselves and we can think of "what we
are going to do if we are not a designer" to design this key artwork.
Week 6
Mr. Vinod gave us a short feedback on our progress of key artwork.
After that, we are given time to work on the key artwork after
feedback while Mr. Vinod and Mr. Asrizal mark our task 1 work.
Week 7
Mr. Vinod provided us with feedback on our key artwork and poster. Mr.
Vinod also went into detail in class about what is expected in the
poster.
We are assigned to design a key artwork using our name or initials. As a
result, I started to think about the question that Mr. Vinod asked us "What
will you be if you are not a designer?". At first, I think about engineer
because I was a science student before coming in a design degree. Hence, I
tried to research it. After that, I tried to research key artwork also.
Figure 5.0 Reference, 20.9.2021
I decided to work on my initial which is S and W or S and Win in my key
artwork. Later on, I started to sketch out some of my ideas.
Figure 5.1 Sketches, 22.9.2021
I decided to choose the Bauhaus typeface to digitalize the first key artwork
based on my bottom left sketch.
Figure 5.2.0 Design #1 First Attempt, 24.9.2021
Figure 5.2.1 Design #1 Second Attempt, 24.9.2021
After that, I realize that the bottom right sketch has some potential to turn
into an interesting design. Hence I decided to work on it. I chose the Futura
typeface for this design.
Figure 5.3.0 Design #2 First Attempt, 26.9.2021
Figure 5.3.1 Design #2 Second Attempt, 26.9.2021
I think that W is overlapping the S and is drawing more attention. Viewers
might read W first then continue with S. Therefore, I tried to modify my
design again.
Figure 5.3.2 Design #2 Third Attempt, 26.9.2021
I feel like the key artwork is slanted to the left. To balance it, I tried to
adjust the terminal of W.

Week 6
When I consider the question, "What am I going to be if I am not a designer?"
two options come to mind. One is to become a musician, and the other is to
become an engineer. Hence, I decided to explore both options with the previous
design #2.
Figure 6.1.0 Design #3 First Outcome, 27.9.2021
Figure 6.1.1 Design #3 Second Outcome, 27.9.2021
After that, I started to explore more about a musician. I started by
looking at instruments as references.
Figure 6.2.0 Reference, 27.9.2021
At first, I thought of brass instruments. I try to find different typefaces,
then I realize Forte is the typeface that is related to instruments.
Figure 6.2.1 Design #4 First Outcome, 27.9.2021
Figure 6.2.2 Design #4 with Color, 27.9.2021
I was not satisfied with the outcome. Hence, I continue to explore string
instruments.

Poster
Week 6
Later on, I experimented with poster design. I didn't spend much time on
it because I was confused by the instructions. I thought we only can use
the key artwork as the only element for the poster.

Week 7
I now have a better understanding of the poster design after listening to
Mr. Vinod's explanation. I started with all black and white, then added
colors.
While designing the poster, I realized that I needed to come up with a name
for this orchestra. Hence, I named this orchestra "Soawave Orchestra." My
inspiration came from the word soave, which means smooth and gentle in
music.

Week 8
After the feedback session, I made changes to my poster to ensure that the
distances between the lines are consistent. I also changed the typeface to
Futura because I think it fits better in the design.

Week 7
For the animated invitation, I decided to use Adobe After Effects to do the
animation. However, I use Adobe Illustration to generate the elements
first.

Week 7
We are required to design a minimum of two collaterals using the key
artwork. Hence, I decided to create a ticket for the concert and a tote
bag.

FEEDBACK
Week 6 Specific Feedback: Mr. Vinod said
that the second design (Figure 5.3.4), the S and W, is clear. It is almost
an infinity symbol, but got the W in there and it makes it cool. However,
I need to think about what I am representing in the key artwork.
General Feedback: We will get lesser feedback. The
letters must be clear and understandable. We must figure out what it
represent (which occupation). Because the poster size is A2, the text
point size for task 2(B) is larger (>12pt).
Week 7 Specific Feedback: Mr. Vinod
expressed disappointment with the changes. The first design is actually
going well. Mr. Vinod is confused as to why the W is a little thinner.
The thickness has decreased, and the S is now too heavy (Figure 6.2.6).
Furthermore, my color scheme is poor, with no contrast between the two
letterforms, so I should study more. My design is too literal because
the S represents wood and the W represents a fingerboard. Instead of
arranging the text in a typographical manner, I should use the graphical
elements for the poster.
Mr. Vinod stated that the key artwork is now workable and has a musical
connotation after the quick modification. Mr. Vinod is unsure why the
circular is present on the poster, but it is still functional. I can
also experiment with different line thicknesses to convey a completely
different message. Mr. Vinod also reminded me that the elements in the
poster should be related to the string instruments that I had chosen.
General Feedback: We can look up the sites that
offer color palettes. We should use the elements of the key art works
to design the poster and the collateral.
Week 8 Specific Feedback:
Poster: Mr. Vinod suggested using a rounded stroke instead of a
square one. Besides, the spacing of the lines is different, I have
to try to maintain some consistency of the distances. Instead of
hiding the logo, I can change it to a brighter color and reduce the
size, so it stands out. As the content gets smaller, the information
content should be brighter, cannot have it be too muted.
Collateral: The bar code scanner will not be able to read the bar
code of the ticket because the background color is too dark. The
black information is a bit small because the size of the ticket
would not be big also. Consider the point size between 8pt (smaller
spectrum) to 12pt (higher spectrum), can use around 10pt or 11pt
because normally old people will watch a philharmonic concert. For
the tote bag, it is not a particularly well design, can make it more
fun. Think about "Would you buy it?" and "Would you be happy to use
it around?". Besides, I need to think about both sides of the tote
bag also.
Animation: Mr. Vinod said that I have to be careful of the lines. I
have the basis of a rough draft there, just have to polish up the
graphics and movement. Make sure that the spacing of the lines is
consistent. Lastly, I have to know to detect the crafting
issues.
Week 9 Specific Feedback:
Mr. Vinod: "Good exploration. Curved lines in the poster are still a little shaky (not smooth). Invite is good. Overall good attempt, has room for improvement."
REFLECTION
Experience:
I was initially confused because I had no idea how to create something
about myself. I believe the letters in my name are unrelated in any way.
However, after several explorations, I was able to overcome my struggle.
The next obstacle I encountered was a lack of time. Students are given a
limited period of time to complete each task, and we must be able to come
up with a new or improved design in that time frame, which I think is the
most difficult part. In terms of collateral, I get excited when my designs
are stimulated. It makes me happy to see my design come "alive". 😆
Observations:
While creating the key artwork, many students do not consider what they
will do if they are not designers. Furthermore, I noticed that many of us
had difficulty designing the poster. I also observed that there are many
amazing key artworks created by other classmates.
Findings:
I discovered that I am not good at expressing myself. I'm not sure what
I'm looking for. This causes me to become lost in my thoughts.
Furthermore, I discovered that I have a limited variety of ideas for
creating a good graphic design with interesting elements. I also
discovered that I was always ignoring the design refinement process, which
resulted in poor crafting.
FURTHER READING
Figure 5.0.1 The typography idea book from Taylor's Library,
18.9.2021
This book's chapter "Explore media and technique" was the one I read. The
authors' content is interesting because they interpret different media and
typographic techniques. Although not all of the techniques are digital, it is
interesting to note that they are still in use. Finally, I completely agree
with the statement that typography's allure is due to illusion.
Figure 5.0.2 Stop, Think, Go, Do : How Typography and Graphic Design
Influence Behavior, 25.9.2021
This book's chapters 7 and 8 were the ones I read. The authors discussed
education in Chapter 7. It is claimed that educational messages containing
information necessitate an additional cognitive step. The goal is to convert
the information embedded in raw image and text into fuel that powers various
behavioral and intellectual engines. Kaspar Schmid's artwork for Global
Corporations in Switzerland is particularly appealing to me. I think that the
designer's method of emphasizing the words is well-crafted. In addition,
Chapter 8 discusses transformation. Transformation can be archived in a
variety of ways, but I prefer the design of China Image shown in the book.
This is because I think the design is clean and simple.
